Mauinuiakama

na Kuana Toress Kahele

Hanohano ‘o Mauinuiakama

Kilakila ‘o Haleakalā

‘Ohuʻohu i ka lei ‘ōpua

Hia‘ai wale ho‘i ka manaʻo

A e ‘ike i ka nani o kēia ‘āina

‘O Maui nō e ka ‘oi

Onaona kuʻu maka i ka nuʻu

Ka nu‘u o ke kuahea

Lehua mau nō me ka lehua

‘O Puʻukukui noho i ka luna

Heha i ka ua noenoe polohina

‘O Maui nō e ka ‘oi

‘Akahi hoʻi au a ‘ike maka

I ka ua Lanihaʻahaʻa

‘O Hāna i ka mālie

Pāwali ana i ke ahe makani

Anu huʻi konikoni ‘o Lauʻawa

‘O Maui nō e ka ‘oi

Kuʻu manaʻo koe lana i ka beauty

O Mauinuiakama

He wahi ulumāhiehie

Lei ana ‘oe i ka pua roselani

Puana ka inoa ua lohe ‘ia

‘O Maui nō e ka ‘oi

Glorious is Mauinuiakama

So majestic at Halakalā

Covered in a garland of clouds

1 am delighted

At the sight of this beautiful land

Maui is the best

My eyes gaze upward

Toward the mountain's rise

Covered with lehua

Puʻukukui sits above

Drowsy in the heavy, gray mist

Maui is indeed the best

I have seen for the first time

The Lanihaʻahaʻa rains

In the calm of Hāna

Speaking softly of the

Love enticing wind of Lauʻawa

Maui is the best

My mind is distracted by the beauty

Of Mauinuiakama

A place so attractively adorned

Wear this lei roselani

And let your name be heard

Maui is indeed the best

Mauinuiakama is one of few affectionate and poetic references to the island of Maui. This song explores Maui and takes you on a journey adrift at Haleakalā bedecked in a lei of clouds. Flying aloft on the winds at Puʻukukui as she sits on high, drowsy in the mists that surround her.. Ka ua lanihaʻahaʻa, the legendary rain gives itself to the wind, the makani lauʻawa. Mauinuiakama, our favored island, your treasures are immeasurable.
